He likes the lucky dip aspect of buying tins that have their labels missing - after all, you never know what might be inside. It's Fergal's idea of living dangerously. That is, until the day he innocently opens up a tin to find...a bloodied human finger. Everyone thinks it's a joke. But not Fergal - and when his next tin discovery is a note with the word 'Help' scribbled on it, he feels compelled to track down the factory responsible for these mysterious and macabre products. Fergal might be hungry to play detective, but has he opened a can of worms...? This Dahl-esque black comedy will have readers squirming on the edge of their seats. Funny, frightening and totally gross - Alex Shearer taps into the repulsive-but-appealing tradition of urban myths that are perennial playground fodder.

Next meeting 2-3pm, Sat 14th June, 'Your Space' in Leeds Central Library

Breeze Reads Virtual Book Club

The Breeze International Youth Festival and Leeds Libraries are working in partnership to present breezereads – an exciting new series of events for young people.

Following public readings from Melvin Burgess, Cathy Hopkins and Sarah Singleton, lots more popular writers will be visiting Leeds this year giving you the chance to meet your favourite author and ask them questions about their work.

2008 is The National Year of Reading. For 16 year old, skateboarding obsessed Sam, life is pretty good. He's got plenty of spare time to hang out at the local skate park, he's got a new girlfriend called Alicia who is damn hot, her mum has finally dumped her rubbish boyfriend Steve and he's got world champion skater Tony Hawk to talk to about the meaning of life (albeit via a poster on his bedroom wall). BUT just when Sam thinks that things couldn't get any better, in 5 seconds his life is changed forever. Alicia gets pregnant and nothing will ever be the same for Sam again."

September 07 - Teen Reads

Angel Blood, by John Singleton
X-Ray, Chicken Angel, Lights Out and Cough Cough are the only four children left in the institution known as the Bin. Burgess is probably best known for his controversial teen-classic Junk but tonight he was reading from his widely acclaimed book, Bloodsong. Set in an apocalyptic Britain, the central charachter, Sigurd, is the chosen one; the golden warrior boy blessed with the courage of a hero and the strength of a lion. Not only did Burgess read from his work exceptionally well, but also answered lots of questons from the audience. I would recommend anyone to got and see Melvin Burgess speak if they have the chance.

A Review of 'V For Vendetta', by Alan Moore

The classic graphic novel V for Vendetta was the first book that the Central Library Teen Reads group read, it was also the first graphic novel any of them had read.
